Zurich’s History
Zurich gets it name from the word, Turicum, which was earlier a customs and fort of the Romans on Limmat River’s left bank. Later on, the settlement spread onto the river’s both sides.
In the middle ages, the city of Zurich developed greatly as a cultural, religious and economic centre. Thereafter, in the 13th century, the city eventually achieved more rights of its self-government, however the city still remained a province of the German empire.
Later on in 1351, Zurich joined the Swiss Confederation, thereby becoming one of the leading members apart from Lucerne and Bern.
Traditionally, the city has seen a lot of developments. The forces of the Protestant were led during 16th century at the Reformation where the city’s liberal politicians played a vital role in the establishment of the federal state of the modern day in 1848. The entrepreneurs of the Zurich city became the backbone of Switzerland’s industrial revolution during the 19th century.
